Arriving in Fukuoka this morning, your first stop will be a visit to Hita Mameda Town, a well-preserved district of historic buildings. While many of the traditional Japanese houses have been converted into cafes, museums and shops, the street itself retains the flavour of the Edo period. Gas lamps still line the streets and electric cables are purposely hidden underground to preserve the traditional feel of the town.

Following that, marvel at the sight of flower fields backed by the magnificent Kuju Mountains at Kuju Flower Park. Located at the base of the mountain range, this large flower park contains around 3 million plants of over 500 varieties, which flowers bloom in turn with the changing seasons. At this time, fragrant lavender are in bloom, permeating the fields with their aroma.

In the evening, retire to your cottage at Shukubo Kawasemi no Sho ~The Kingfisher Resort~ on a highland overlooking the forest. Built by 7 master carpenters, each room is unique, yet equally comfortable. Soak in the soda hot springs found here and dine on meals created using local ingredients, including homegrown vegetables and herbs.

Day 02 (Sat, 29 Jun'24)

Stop by the ‘Niagara of Japan’, Harajiri Falls this morning. Formed by an eruption of Mt Aso thousands of years ago, the arc shaped waterfall spreads across 120m and cascades down 20m. Admire the falls from all angles, from the top, basin, and even a suspension bridge directly across from it.

Stroll through the old streets of Usuki, a former castle town most well-known for its stone Buddhas. Beyond its castle ruins and preserved samurai streets, Usuki is also a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy thanks to its diverse food culture and sustainable agricultural practices. Uncover some of its gastronomical delights as you walk through the historic town.

Day 03 (Sun, 30 Jun'24)

This morning, head out to Lake Kagurame in the hills of Mt Tsurumi to catch sight of over 300,000 Japanese irises of over 80 varieties blooming here in this season. Take a walk through the flowers and admire the view of white, blue and purple blooms against the mountain and reflected on the lake’s surface.

Explore the quaint town of Yufuin later and stroll down the picturesque shopping street of Yunotsubo Yokocho where boutique stores, intimate cafes and small museums can be found. Drop by the COMICO Art Museum to see artworks by some of Japan’s most famous artists, some of which have been incorporated with the natural scenery. Then finish off your exploration at Lake Kinrinko at the end of the street and at the base of Mt Yufu, where both hot and cold spring waters bubble up.

Day 04 (Mon, 01 Jul'24)

Pay a visit to the ‘Kitchen of Kitakyushu’, Tanga Market, this morning. Originating along the banks of the Kantake river where fish were offloaded in the early 1900s, the market has since expanded into a group of about 120 stores while retaining a retro Showa era vibe. Stroll through the narrow streets of the market and sample some of the freshest seafood and produce.

Now synonymous with Japan’s multifaceted toilets, TOTO is a renowned global manufacturer of plumbing equipment. At the TOTO Museum, see how the company helped to revolutionise the sanitation industry though exhibits of its history and the evolution of their products over the last century.

Day 05 (Tue, 02 Jul'24)

Fukuoka – Ashibe – Yunomoto

Today, you will take a ferry over to Iki Island, a sacred island and birthplace of Shinto, home to over 150 shrines and beautiful sea views.

Thanks to its location between Japan and China and Korea, Iki Island was an important trading post during the Yayoi period. Over at the Iki City Ikikoku Museum, you can learn about the history of Iki through videos and dioramas and see interactive exhibits of around 2,000 excavated artefacts. The museum building itself is also the last work of renowned architect Kisho Kurokawa and was designed to blend in with its surrounds.

Moving on to the Haranotsuji Archaeological Site, get a feel of the ancient capital of Iki through a life-sized replica of the 2,500-year-old settlement. Reconstructed using traditional methods and materials, you can see the unique ancient structures and historical artefacts at this designated special historic site of Japan.

Retire to Iki Kairi Murakami this evening, the only Michelin Guide 5-star ryokan on a remote island, where your private open-air hot spring and ocean view awaits. For dinner, feast on the bounty of nature with local ingredients such as Iki beef, abalone, and rare red sea urchin.

Day 06 (Wed, 03 Jul'24)

Yunomoto – Tatsunoshima – Yunomoto

This morning, take the Tatsunoshima Sightseeing Cruise out to the uninhabited island roughly 2km off the coast of Iki Island. Take in the stunning views of crystal-clear turquoise water, white sandy beaches, and rugged cliff faces as you cruise round the island, and make a stop on its shining shores for a moment in paradise!

Get up close to some dolphins later at Iki Dolphin Park. Formed by closing off a natural cove, you can watch 5 bottlenose dolphins swimming freely here and interact with them in various activities.

Dive into the world of Iki Shochu next at Ikinokura Distillery. Now a recognised Geographical Indication, Iki barley shochu originated on the island when local brewers combined their high quality rice koji, abundant barley harvests and new distillation techniques to create an original liquor. Learn about the traditional shochu making methods which are still being carried out today and try some Iki Shochu for yourself.

Day 07 (Thu, 04 Jul'24)

Yunomoto – Fukuoka

Drop by some of Iki Island’s natural wonders before you take a ferry back to Fukuoka today. First, stop by Saruiwa, the ‘monkey rock’ so named for its resemblance to a monkey sitting and looking out to sea. Regarded as a pillar created by deities to prevent the island from washing away, the rock is now a popular icon of the island.

Next, head over to Oni no Ashiato, a 110m circumference hole in a cape known as the ‘demon’s footprint’. According to legend, the hole was created when a demon planted his foot here to save a whale, with the other footprint located at Tatsunoshima. Now, the ‘footprint’ provides a unique view and has become a popular fishing hole.
