Arriving in Hokkaido today, start off your journey with flowers at Takinoue Park. In time for the Shibazakura (moss phlox) festival, you will be treated to a carpet of pretty pink, white and purple flowers covering the 100,000m2 hillside. Smell the sweet fragrance of the flowers and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, including a view of the snow-capped Daisetsuzan Mountain Range, as you meander round the walking paths.

In the afternoon, tulips take over at Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park. Marvel at the sight of 1.2 million tulips of 120 varieties at the Tulip Fair in this sprawling park. The brightly coloured tulips are arranged beautifully, creating flower rainbows and designs in the huge fields. Go up to the windmill observation tower in the middle of the flower fields for a panoramic view.

Day 03 (Fri, 24 May'24)

Abashiri – Shiretoko

Continuing your enjoyment of flowers, the first stop today will be at Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park. Started from just a handful of plants by a single farmer, the park now spans 10ha with millions of moss phlox covering an entire hillside. About 70% of the flowers are hand planted by the owner himself, and some areas even include designs made from the different coloured flowers. As a unique feature, it is possible to drive a go kart round a course that winds through the flower fields.

Make a quick stop at Sunayu along the shores of Lake Kussharo and soak your feet in a hot spring foot bath on the beach! Hot springs run under the sand here and visitors can dig their own personal footbaths in the sand, or use the one built on the beach. Rest your feet while you enjoy the view of the lake and surrounding mountains.

One of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls, Oshinkoshin Waterfall is a spectacular waterfall next to a coastal road. It is also known as “Twin Beauties Waterfall” as its stream splits into two partway down the approximately 80m drop. Climb the stairs next to the falls to get up close to this powerful waterfall.

Shiretoko

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Shiretoko Five Lakes were formed by the eruption of Mt. Iou and look whimsically like a god’s handprint. Visitors can go up to the lake via an elevated boardwalk used to protect the fragile ecosystems. From here, you can enjoy views of the lake, Sea of Okhotsk and surrounding mountains.

Learn more about Shiretoko’s wildlife on a Night Safari this evening. Get a guided introduction to the wild animals which inhabit Shiretoko before taking a ride into the forest to see if you can spot any of them!

Day 05 (Sat, 26 May'24)

Shiretoko – Akan

As we leave the lakes this morning, we will drive along the Shiretoko Pass, one of the top three scenic driving routes in Japan. This 738m high pass connects Rausu and Shari and provides splendid views of Mt. Rausu, Shiretoko’s highest mountain, and Kunashiri Island along the way.

Have some delicious yoghurt gelato at La Laiterie Nakashibetsu later in the day. Nakashibetsu is known for dairy products and those sold at La Laiterie use fresh milk free of additives. You can try a range of ice creams, yoghurt drinks, and even cheese at this shop.

Day 06 (Sun, 27 May'24)

Akan – Tokachi

Also known as the five-coloured lake, Lake Onneto was formed by the eruption of Mt. Meakan. Its water changes colour depending on sunlight and temperature, going from a gleaming bottle green to a deep azure through the course of a day. Get a unique view of the lake when we stop by here this morning.

Feel the vastness of Hokkaido later at Naitai Highland Farm, Japan’s largest public pasture at 1,700ha. Take a break and admire the panoramic views of the Tokachi plains from Naitai Terrace observation deck and perhaps catch sight of some of the approximately 2,000 cows which graze here.

Afterwards, visit Hokkaido’s most popular sweets maker, Ryugetsu Sweetpia Garden. Famous for its delectable Sanporoku cakes, you can find all kinds of confectionary here, including exclusive ones sold only at the cafe. Pick up some delicious confections as souvenirs in this “kingdom of sweets”.

Day 07 (Tue, 28 May'24)

Tokachi – Urakawa

Comprising the 4 towns of Urakawa, Samani, Erimo and Hiroo, Tongari Road is a coastal area blessed with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Hidaka mountains on the other. Take part in a specially arranged Tongari Activity today where you will get to visit a local farm and enjoy some fresh seafood caught from the surrounding sea in a barbeque lunch. Then, learn more about a specialty of the area, konbu, and gain a greater appreciation for this seaweed essential to Japanese cuisine.

Go round to the dramatic Cape Erimo, where the Hidaka Mountain Range ends and the sea begins. The windy cape is where you can look out onto the Pacific Ocean from rocky cliffs up to 70m high and enjoy panoramic views along with sightings of the harbour seals that live here.

You can also view the cape from the other side on a Konbu Boat Cruise. Bringing you round the cape and offshore islands, adventure in the sea where splendid views of the mountain range spread out before you while harbour seals keep watch. As its name suggests, you can also see where kelp is harvested in this top production area of Hidaka Konbu.

Day 08 (Wed, 29 May'24)

Urakawa – Shikotsu

This morning, go on a guided tour of Urakawa JRA, Japan’s top racehorse training facility. Established by the Japan Racing Association, this spacious facility follows strict quality management to create the optimal environment for training and raising racehorses. Take a peek into the stables and horse-riding grounds and learn what goes into producing a top-class racehorse.

Later, pay a visit to the beautiful Lake Shikotsu. This crater lake formed over 40,000 years ago is one of the deepest and clearest lakes in Japan. Take a glass-bottomed boat cruise on the lake to truly appreciate its natural beauty and the exceptional 'Shikotsu blue'.

Cap off your holiday with a shopping spree at Mitsui Outlet Park Sapporo Kitahiroshima. The biggest outlet mall in Hokkaido, shop for all your favourite brands at outlet prices at this large indoor facility.

Do more shopping for food products at the Sapporo Curb Market, a collection of nearly 80 stores outside Sapporo’s central wholesale market. Specialising in seafood, you can get some of the freshest ones here. Try some of the seasonal offerings from the various stalls and pick up some Hokkaido souvenirs.

Spend some time wandering round the quaint streets of Otaru this afternoon. A former major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, the charming buildings that line the streets now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries selling mouth-watering creations, and intricate glassware ornaments.
