Discover Japan’s Three Views: Timeless Beauty and New Horizons

When it comes to breathtaking scenery, Japan’s Three Views (Nihon Sankei) have long been celebrated as the country’s most iconic landscapes. Selected over 400 years ago by the scholar Hayashi Gahō during the Edo period, these views were chosen not just for their natural beauty, but also for their cultural and historical significance. Visiting these sites is more than just sightseeing—it is an opportunity to connect with Japan’s history and spirit.

The Classic Three Views of Japan

Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture

Located near Sendai in northern Japan, Matsushima Bay is renowned for its more than 200 pine-clad islands scattered across the sea. The name “Matsushima” literally means “pine islands,” and the area has inspired countless poems and artworks throughout Japanese history. Take a scenic cruise round the islands, visit charming temples such as Zuiganji and Godaido, and bask in the serene coastal atmosphere that is both rejuvenating and picturesque.

Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture

Famous for the iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima is a symbol of Japan’s harmonious blend of nature and spirituality. At high tide, the vermilion gate and shrine appear to float on the sea, creating a mystical and unforgettable sight. Beyond the shrine, the island offers charming streets for wandering round, hiking trails on Mount Misen, and plenty of friendly deer.

Amanohashidate, Kyoto Prefecture

Amanohashidate, meaning “bridge to heaven,” is a natural sandbar spanning Miyazu Bay in northern Kyoto. The pine-covered strip of land is said to resemble a path connecting earth to the heavens, especially when the tradition of “matanozoki”, bending over to view the landscape upside down through your legs, is employed. The best views come from the mountains at either side of the sandbar where scenic chairlift rides and panoramic views can be enjoyed along with various other attractions and cultural sites.

The New Three Views of Japan

In 1915, as Japan continued to embrace modernisation and travel became more accessible, a new selection of views was chosen to reflect the evolving beauty of the nation. These New Three Views (Shin Nihon Sankei) highlight destinations that combine natural splendour with cultural appeal, offering fresh inspiration for travellers.

Onuma, Hokkaido Prefecture

Nestled at the foot of Mount Komagatake, Onuma Quasi-National Park is a treasure of northern Japan. Its namesake lake, dotted with small islands and framed by volcanic mountains, offers spectacular seasonal scenery. In summer, vibrant greenery and clear waters create a refreshing landscape, while autumn transforms the surroundings into a tapestry of warm hues, and winter blankets the area in pristine snow, offering a tranquil and serene setting.

Miho no Matsubara, Shizuoka Prefecture

Miho no Matsubara offers one of Japan’s most iconic views, with over 30,000 pine trees lining its picturesque coastline against the majestic backdrop of Mount Fuji. The striking contrast of the unique black sand beach, verdant pines, and snow-capped peak creates a scene of timeless beauty throughout the seasons. Miho no Matsubara is also steeped in legend, being the setting of the Hagoromo story where a celestial maiden’s robe is hidden by a fisherman, and its captivating scenery has been immortalised in ukiyo-e woodblock prints by Hiroshige Utagawa.

Yabakei, Oita Prefecture

Located in Kyushu, Yabakei is a dynamic gorge of rugged cliffs, winding rivers, and lush forests. Known for its dramatic rock formations carved out over 2.5 million years, the landscape offers many scenic viewpoints that change with the seasons. The area’s beauty is particularly captivating during autumn, when the leaves transform into a vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and yellow.
