The day begins with an exclusive Hakodate Activity at a local vegetable farm for a truly personal encounter with the land and the people who tend it. Meet the farmer, learn about the crops being grown, and try your hand at harvesting the vegetables yourself, before gaining an insight into how the freshly picked produce is prepared and readied for market. More than just a farm visit, this is a warm, unhurried experience built around genuine human connection, one that only comes from meeting the people behind the food on your plate.

Follow that with a hands-on cooking class, where you will learn to prepare traditional Japanese dishes using the freshest produce and ingredients sourced from southern Hokkaido. Adding to your culinary repertoire, this is a delicious and memorable way to bring a taste of the region home with you.

The day continues with a visit to Michi no Eki Nanairo Nanae, a delightful roadside rest stop in the town of Nanae, celebrated as the birthplace of Western-style agriculture in Japan. The complex showcases the region’s farming heritage through its fresh produce, local dairy products, and seasonal specialities, with apples holding particular pride of place as the town’s signature crop. Just next door, The Danshaku Lounge pays tribute to Baron Ryukichi Kawada, the pioneering figure who introduced Western potato farming to Hokkaido. Browse the museum, sample the famous Danshaku potatoes the region is named for, and pick up a few local treats along the way.

For early risers, an optional visit to a fish auction offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of Hakodate’s most important daily rituals. Watch buyers and sellers haggle briskly over rows of glistening fresh catch in a fast-paced, smooth-operating transaction, a real glimpse into the trade that keeps Hokkaido’s seafood reputation alive. Return to the hotel afterwards for a well-earned breakfast.

Later, experience an exclusive sushi-making class held at a local restaurant. Led by a skilled chef who will guide you through the refined techniques of proper sushi preparation, learn the art of sushi using premium in-season ingredients sourced fresh from the region. Savour the fruits of your labour over lunch, complemented by the option of a thoughtfully curated sake pairing to round off the experience beautifully. 

The afternoon leads to the historic Hakodate Bay and its iconic Red Brick Warehouses, dating back to 1909. Once the working heart of one of Japan’s first international ports, these handsome warehouses now house a large variety of unique shops, restaurants, and museums, a wonderful place to spend the afternoon along the waterfront.

Spend the morning at the Hakodate Morning Market, one of Japan’s most famous fresh produce markets and a Hakodate institution for over 80 years. Spread across more than 250 stalls, the market is a sensory feast of fresh seafood, seasonal vegetables, and local specialities, with vendors calling out their daily catch and offering samples along the way.

Travel up to Chalet Ivy Jozankei where you can spend the evening soaking in the comfort of your private hot spring bath. Nestled in the rich natural surrounds of Jozankei Valley, relax in the mineral-rich hot spring waters and enjoy the serenity you will find here.

Day 05 (Sun, 06 Jun’27)

This morning, head to the remarkable Hoheikyo Dam, a beautiful arched concrete dam set deep within a primeval forest, accessible only by riding an electric bus through a one-kilometre tunnel. Emerging from the tunnel into the open valley, the sight of the dramatic grey dam wall framed by fresh summer greenery is a striking and unexpected reward for the journey.

Spend the rest of the day with a leisurely stroll around Jozankei Onsen, a charming hot spring resort town nestled in the Toyohira River valley, with a handful of local shops, cafes, footbaths, and riverside walks to explore at a relaxed pace.

Day 06 (Mon, 07 Jun’27)

Take a day drip out to Otaru and spend some time leisurely exploring its quaint streets and picturesque canal. A former major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, the charming buildings that line the streets now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries selling mouth-watering creations, and intricate glassware ornaments. Also worth a visit is Otaru’s sushi street, where only the freshest seafood makes it to the menu in every sushi restaurant along the row.

This season is just right for savouring one of Hokkaido’s most prized seasonal delicacies, sea urchin. Harvested from the cold, nutrient-rich waters surrounding the island, Hokkaido uni is widely regarded as the finest in Japan, celebrated for its extraordinarily sweet, creamy flavour and melt-in-the-mouth texture that is a world apart from what is found elsewhere.

Make your way up to Sapporo today and stop for a shopping spree at Mitsui Outlet Park Sapporo Kitahiroshima. The largest outlet mall in Hokkaido, shop for all your favourite brands at outlet prices at this large, comfortable indoor facility.

A free and easy day in Sapporo awaits you! As Japan’s fifth largest city, Sapporo has developed rapidly into a bustling metropolis. Shopping options are abundant both above and below ground, with multi-storey department stores such as Daimaru and Tokyu lining the streets, and an extensive underground network of stores offering souvenirs, apparel, cosmetics, electronics, and more. When you are satisfied with your shopping spree, head to one of the many eateries to have a steaming bowl of Hokkaido’s signature miso ramen, soup curry, or Genghis Khan barbeque to complete your Hokkaido experience.
