Flying in to Amami Oshima today, begin your relaxing holiday with the refreshing sight of sweeping coastal views at Cape Ayamaru. This morning, pay a visit to the Hoseimaru Bonito Factory where bonito flakes are produced. Used in making soup stock and other Japanese dishes, see how bonito flakes are made from start to finish, from the filleting of fresh tuna to shaving the dried flesh into thin flakes, ready to be packed and shipped. Of course, a visit here will not be complete without bringing a pack of the bonito flakes home with you!
Amami Oshima Tsumugi silk is considered one of the world’s three best textiles thanks to its fine weaving and unique mud dyeing technique which is used only in Amami Oshima. The high-quality silk with intricate patterns takes over 6 months and 40 processes to complete, but boasts a refined quality and design that is highly sought after, especially for kimonos. Learn all about this exquisite fabric and how it is made on a visit to Oshima Tsumugimura today.
Dedicated to the late artist known for his paintings depicting the nature of Amami Oshima, the Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art houses roughly 455 of Tanaka’s works which are displayed on a rotational basis. Spending the final years of his life on the island, Tanaka only gained recognition for his works posthumously and the museum was eventually built in honour of him, displaying works by him and other artists associated with the island. See his renditions of the islands even as you view it with your own eyes and gain a new perspective on nature’s masterpieces.

The Kuroshio no Mori Mangrove Park is the second largest mangrove forest in Japan and home to rich flora and fauna, some of which are designated special natural monuments such as the Amami rabbit. Look out for these creatures and more as you explore the mangrove in a canoe and immerse yourself in this rich ecosystem teeming with nature’s wonders.
In the afternoon, take a ride on the Marine Viewer Seto and explore the depths of the Oshima Strait! This glass bottomed boat will bring you a view of the colourful world under the sea where tropical fish swim freely round coral reefs!
Day 04 (Tue, 20 Oct’20)
Amami Oshima – Fukuoka

Delve into nature with a walk through the Amami Nature Observation Forest this morning. Situated in the Nagakumo mountains, you can find a large variety of creatures such as the Ryukyu robin, Owston’s white-backed woodpecker, Ryukyu green pigeon and more as you walk through the lush forests that they call home.
After lunch, drop by Hara Habuya, a shop specialising in products made from snakeskin and bones. Besides the shop, be entertained by a live snake show where you will be introduced to different varieties of snakes, including the venomous Habu snake which is a feature of the store.
In the evening, return to the mainland on a flight to Fukuoka.

Stop by at Kinoshita Mokugei today, a woodworking establishment known for kumiko wood joining. Traditionally used for creating gorgeous latticework decorations for doors and windows, it is now also used for furniture and other items. Famously known for their work on the luxury cruise train Seven Stars, see the intricate designs and skilful craftsmanship of kumiko masters here.
In operation since 1711, the Shoubunsu Vinegar Brewery prides itself in using traditional methods handed down within the family for generations. Made using organic local ingredients, the quality of the ingredients can be tasted in the resulting brown rice vinegar. Enjoy a delicious meal whipped up with their signature vinegar here.

Join in the local festivities at a special Takeo Activity today! In time for their local autumn festival, catch an impressive display of yabusame horseback archery this morning. With a history of over 830 years, this is said to be the oldest yabusame in Japan and has remained relatively unchanged since its beginning. Watch as skilled archers dressed in elaborate period clothing show off this incredible feat before feasting on a sumptuous lunch prepared using Takeo’s proud “Special A grade” Saga Biyori rice.
Sprawling out over 150,000 square metres at the base of Mt Mifune, Mifuneyama Rakuen is a picturesque garden sculpted over 3 years by former ruler of Takeo, Shigeyoshi Nabeshima. The mountain, trees, flowers, pond and tea houses all come together beautifully, like a scene from a Chinese painting.

Get a hands-on experience of one of Fukuoka’s most famous crafts when you try Hakata doll making today.
