Standing out on a steep hill overlooking the coast, the Katsuren Castle Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the former seat of Lord Amawari. Destroyed during his failed rebellion against the Ryukyu Kingdom, the castle, which incorporates the natural hilly landscape into its construction, still retains majestic stone foundations and a wide, open view of the ocean.
Get a great view of the emerald sea as you drive along the scenic Kaichu Road. A 4.7 kilometre stretch of straight road connecting Yokatsu Peninsula to Hanza Island with water on both sides of it, you will feel like you are gliding over the sea.
Day 02 (Sat, 08 Feb’20)
Motobu – Kunigami – Motobu
(Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Orion Motobu Resort & Spa (hot spring) or similar
The northernmost tip of the Okinawan main island, Cape Hedo is where the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. From its rugged cliffs and lookout points, watch the swirling blue waters and crashing waves create a dramatic scene amid the open expanse of the coast and sea.
Part of the Yanbaru National Park, Daisekirinzan is a nature paradise and local power spot. Full of subtropical plants and extraordinary rock formations, four different trails bring you to the various natural attractions of the park, giving you ample chance to immerse yourself in the wonderful nature of Okinawa.
Nestled in the bowels of Okinawa’s forests is the stunning Hiji Falls. Getting here takes a trek through a roughly 2km long walking trail with both uphill portions and a suspension bridge hanging 17m over a valley, but the sight of the 26m tall waterfall cascading down amid untouched nature is well worth the trip!
Day 03 (Sun, 09 Feb’20)
Motobu – Nanjo
(Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Hyakuna Garan or similar
The quaint town of Bise gives you a glimpse into a traditional Okinawan village where people and nature coexist, and peaceful pathways lead past small shophouses and residences to the ocean. Famously known for its row of approximately 20,000 Fukugi trees lining a sandy path, take a peaceful stroll through the Bise area and you will see why it has been featured in many commercials and films such as Jimami Tofu.
Pay a visit to Churaumi Aquarium, regarded as the best aquarium in Japan. Admire Okinawan sea life, including whale sharks, manta rays and other species of fish, in its huge Kuroshio Tank, one of the biggest in the world.
Take in the spectacular view of grassy fields and the azure East China Sea at Cape Manzamo. ‘Manzamo’ means ‘ten thousand sit field’ and refers to the expanse of grass that is supposedly big enough for ten thousand men to sit on. The cape, however, is more famous for its breath-taking view of clear, blue waters and a rock shaped like an elephant’s trunk.
Day 04 (Mon, 10 Feb’20)
Nanjo
(Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Hyakuna Garan or similar
Get a multitude of experiences at Okinawa World, a museum facility that introduces Okinawan culture and nature. Walk through a labyrinth of Ryukyu limestone at the Gyokusendo Cave, a natural wonder formed over 300,000 years. Step into Kingdom Village, a replica of a traditional Ryukyu village with historical red-roofed houses converted into studios that introduce Okinawan crafts such as fabric weaving, dyeing, paper making, glass blowing and more. Round off your visit with a traditional Eisa Dance Performance and be entertained by dancers carrying drums in this vibrant and heroic traditional Okinawan dance!
Considered to be the holiest site in Okinawa, Sefa Utaki is a prominent power spot and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Native Okinawan religion focuses on nature worship, so it is no wonder that this site with fantastic natural rock formations, dense forests and a view of the sea was the main location for religious ceremonies. Regardless of your religious beliefs, the refreshing and beautiful nature of Sefa Utaki is worth a stroll through.
Over at the Chinen Misaki Park, take in the azure blue waters of the Pacific against the Okinawan coast! From the vantage point of the park, it is easy to lose yourself in the shades of blue sky and water and enjoy a view that stretches out to the offshore island of Kudakajima on a clear day.
Day 05 (Tue, 11 Feb’20)
Nanjo – Naha
(Breakfast/-/-)
Hotel: Hyatt Regency Naha, Okinawa or similar
The colourful glass pieces from Ryukyu Glass Village are sure to make a good souvenir of your trip to Okinawa! Completely handmade by artisans and decorated in vibrant colours, the glass items, both decorative and functional, are works of art in themselves. Watch how the glass pieces are made, or try making your own original glass cups here!
Make a stop at Shuri Castle, a must-visit when in Okinawa. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was the former centre of government and residence for the rulers of the Ryukyu Kingdom up until Okinawa was made part of Japan in 1879. The iconic red-lacquered castle was originally built in the 1300s but had to be rebuilt multiple times after destruction by war and fires. It now acts as a museum exhibiting the splendour of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Serving as the second residence and entertainment quarters of the Ryukyu royal family in the past, Shikinaen Garden is a large garden filled with subtropical plants. Strolling through the winding paths of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will note Chinese influences in its design, along with uniquely Okinawan elements such as the red tile roof of the wooden palace on the grounds.

The warm waters around Okinawa attract humpback whales from January to March, making it a great place for some Whale Watching! Take a boat out into the ocean in search of these majestic creatures and perhaps you will find yourself in a close encounter with a school of 30 ton whales!
Shop to your heart’s content at Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa. Located near to the capital city of Naha, this large outlet mall houses over 100 local and international brands and is popular with locals and visitors alike.
