A UNESCO World Heritage Site that is over 350 years old, the garden consists of a preserved residence that was the home of the former ruling Shimazu clan, ponds, streams and shrines, including a cat shine for cat-lovers! The attractive garden is accentuated by the “borrowed scenery” of Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima in the background, creating picture perfect settings.

After a good lunch, stop by at the largest lake in Kyushu, Lake Ikeda. With a shoreline of 15km, the picturesque lake is a designated natural monument, home to giant eels and, supposedly, Japan’s equivalent of the loch ness monster, Issie.
Day 03 (Sun, 17 Nov’19)
Ibusuki – Kirishima
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Sukinoyado Yakakutei (hot spring) or similar
The symbol of Kagoshima, Sakurajima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay, it stands at 1,117m and has a circumference of about 50km. Taking a ferry to Sakurajima, stop by at the Yunohira Observatory, the closest one to the peak at 373m, for a view of the mountain peak, port, Kagoshima City and mountains of Kyushu. Another fantastic observation point, the Arimura Lava Observatory is where you can peek into the volcano’s craters. Walk along the lava flow on the mountainside, distinguished according to eruption date by the state of the surrounding vegetation.
Black vinegar is known to have a multitude of health benefits and Kakuida Black Vinegar Factory has been producing it for the last 200 years. Try some of their high quality black vinegar, brewed for more than three years in earthenware pots, and rejuvenate your body from the inside.

Kirishima – Mt Aso
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Yumeshizuku (hot spring) or similar
This morning, head to Kirishima Shrine, considered the “Nikko of the West” due to its beautiful design being similar to the extravagant Nikko Shrine. The shrine has strong connections to Japanese mythology and is dedicated to Ninigi no Mikoto, descendent of sun goddess Amaterasu, who became human to rule the area. An 800-year-old sacred cedar tree said to answer prayers can also be found on its grounds.
Following that is one of FMJ’s signature activities and a favourite amongst our customers, Follow Me Kitchen! Showcasing seasonal local ingredients and prepared with the full passion of the locals, this is where you will find both your heart and stomach filled.
Day 05 (Tue, 19 Nov’19)
Mt Aso – Beppu
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Terrace Midoubaru (private hot spring) or similar
One of Miyazaki prefecture’s most famous sights, Takachiho Gorge is a V-shaped gorge created by the Gokase River eroding through volcanic rock. The 17m high Minainotaki waterfall cascading into the river midway through the gorge paints a particularly impressive picture as the clear water cascades down against a background of grey cliffs. Walk along this picturesque gorge and be refreshed!
Steeped in mythology, the nearby Amano Iwato Shrine is built near a cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu was said to have hidden herself from her brother, depriving the world of light. Built at the edge of a river surrounded by tranquil forests, the shrine is shrouded in a mystical air befitting of the legend behind it.
Not for the faint-hearted, the next stop is Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge, one of the longest and tallest pedestrian suspension bridges in Japan. Spanning 390m across a mountain valley and towering at 777m in height, fantastic views of beautiful waterfalls, great forests, mountain ranges and a deep valley can be had from here.
Day 06 (Wed, 20 Nov’19)
Beppu
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Terrace Midoubaru (private hot spring) or similar
(Walking distance: 4.3km. Level: Intermediate)
Walk the Beppu Course today, starting from the peaceful Shidakako Lake located 600m above sea level. Venture through the peaceful forested trails to get to observatories where you can feast your eyes on panoramic views of Mt Yufu and the surrounding forested landscapes.
After lunch, pay a visit to a couple of the Hells of Beppu, unique hot springs that are visual treats rather than for soaking in. The Blood Pond Hell with its blood red waters and Sea Hell with its cobalt blue waters are particularly attractive with their unusual appearances.
Day 07 (Thu, 21 Nov’19)
Beppu – Fukuoka
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)

It is famous for multiple caves, 3,700 stone buddhas, and splendid panoramas from its platforms.
