Arriving in Tottori this morning, begin your journey with sumptuous lunch at Japan’s original shabu shabu restaurant. A dish that is now available all over Japan, shabu shabu originated when the restaurant’s founder brought the style of eating thin slices of meat lightly cooked in soup to Tottori from China. Replacing mutton with Tottori’s famous Olein 55 wagyu beef, shabu shabu here is matched perfectly with a sesame sauce in a mouth-watering combination.

Established in 1980 by Adachi Zenko in order to combine his love of art and garden design, the Adachi Museum of Art houses a collection of renowned Japanese paintings, ceramics and other artwork. Appreciate the artistic beauty of the gardens and artworks on a visit here this morning.

Japanese swords imbue an inexplicable beauty and power, having historically been associated with samurai warriors. Learn to appreciate the Japanese sword at Nippon Genshosha, a sword-making workshop bringing the tradition of swordsmithing to the new generation. Later, take a stroll round Kinosaki Onsen, a quaint town of picturesque ryokan and old shophouses along a serene willow tree-lined river and one of the most popular hot spring towns in Japan. The old-fashioned town has successfully avoided overdevelopment, maintaining a cosy atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a stroll along the streets in yukata, visiting the town’s public baths, small shops and traditional game arcades.

Spend the day exploring the town of Uji, the matcha capital of Japan with a long history of Japanese green tea production. Dive right into the world of matcha by making your own in a matcha grinding experience. Using a traditional stone mill, grind tea leaves into matcha powder which you can then whisk up into a rich drink, especially flavourful given its freshness.
Continue your matcha journey with a matcha kaiseki lunch at Tatsumiya, a traditional Japanese restaurant. Combining Kyoto kaiseki with matcha, Tatsumiya showcases both specialties in a delicious fusion of traditions, transforming matcha from something you drink into something you eat.
Afterwards, take a stroll down Byodoin Omotesando, the main approach to Byodoin Temple. With numerous tea stores lining both sides of the 300m long street, this is the perfect spot to find some tea and souvenirs whilst enjoying the aroma of tea wafting through the air in one of Japan’s top 100 fragrant sites.
